Behind the Tide: The Sea of Images

The twen­ty-four­th edi­ti­on of the exhi­bi­ti­on and rese­ar­ch pro­ject based on reflec­ting on the posi­ti­on of moving ima­ges and con­tem­po­rary art, Cinemaniac > Think Film, brin­gs to the side pro­gram­me of Pula Film Festival a selec­ti­on of wor­ks from the recent inter­na­ti­onal exhi­bi­ti­on Behind the Tide of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka. The selec­ti­on focu­ses on the wor­ks of eig­ht artis­ts made pri­ma­rily in the medi­um of film and photography.

By obser­ving the imme­di­ate sur­ro­un­din­gs as a spa­ce that entwi­nes his­to­ri­cal per­s­pec­ti­ves, everyday events, and the ima­gi­na­ti­on of the futu­re, the exhi­bi­ti­on Behind the Tide: Sea of Images direc­ts atten­ti­on to the laye­red con­texts that fra­me the com­plex dyna­mics of mari­ti­me logis­tics, which, as the foun­da­ti­on of the modern soci­ety, geopo­li­tics, and eco­nomy, are struc­tu­red aro­und a seri­es of con­di­ti­ons, posi­ti­ons, and ide­as spe­ci­fi­cal­ly sha­ped by the sea. The selec­ti­on spans from the­mes of labo­ur and por­trayals of life and work by and on the sea as fun­da­men­tal con­di­ti­ons of exis­ten­ce, thro­ugh cur­rent phe­no­me­na inclu­ding con­tem­po­rary sce­nes of migra­ti­on, eco­logy, lan­d­s­ca­pes as sites of explo­ita­ti­on and extrac­ti­on. Focusing on the cor­re­la­ti­on of ima­ge and the wor­ld, the moving ima­ges esta­blish a rela­ti­on­ship to cur­rent film and artis­tic cur­rents, new visu­al lan­gu­ages of con­tem­po­rary art and how the­se entwi­ne in the views on cur­rent aes­t­he­tic phe­no­me­na and soci­al issues.

Cinemaniac > Think Film is a mul­ti-year mul­ti­me­dia pro­ject that explo­res the posi­ti­on of moving ima­ges wit­hin the con­text of con­tem­po­rary art. It has been reali­zed sin­ce 2002 as a side pro­gram of the Pula Film Festival. This year’s edi­ti­on was reali­zed in col­la­bo­ra­ti­on with the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka, the Pula Film Festival, Apoteka — Space for Contemporary Art, and the Metamedia association.
